International Women's Day is a crucial date to remember the importance of fighting daily for women's rights, which continue to be at risk worldwide. According to Pizani Orsini, despite some advances, gender equity remains a distant goal for the vast majority of countries.
Violence against women is one of the most pressing challenges, as it continues to be one of the most common human rights violations, with 7 out of 10 women experiencing some type of violence at some point in their lives. This violence not only affects women's professional and family development but can also cost them their lives. Wage gaps between men and women are also a concern, ranging from 14% to 35% in different parts of the world, reflecting significant inequalities despite the growing number of women graduating from university.
Globally, the 30% minimum target for female political participation set in 1995 has still not been reached. Despite this scenario, countries like Mexico have seen significant advances, with gender parity in government and a cabinet with 58% female participation. However, there is still a long way to go to achieve full participation of women in all areas.
On this March 8, 2025, the slogan "For all women and girls, rights, empowerment, and equality" highlights the diversity of experiences and the need to ensure the rights of all women without exception. Despite ongoing challenges, the important progress made is also recognized, and there is a call to reaffirm the pending commitments concerning equality and women's rights.
Pizani Orsini, UN Women representative in Mexico, emphasizes the importance of maintaining momentum in the fight for women's rights, making evident the need for joint action from all sectors of society. She highlights that the commitment to gender equality should not be exclusive to the government but requires the active participation of society as a whole.
In the current global context, where setbacks in women's rights are reported in many countries, the importance of continuing to advance towards equality and diversity is emphasized. International Women's Day is an occasion to recognize the achievements reached thus far and to reaffirm the commitment to continue working for a more equitable future for all women.
